Finding a Therapist

When you are struggling, it can feel overwhelming in itself to seek out support. Here are a few helpful tips we want you to keep in mind:

  • Many therapists offer a free phone consultation so know you can use this time to see if they are a good fit for you.

  • Therapy tailored to you means that you are able to ask what specialties the therapist has and what experience they have treating your concerns.

  • If you have a particular worldview/cultural background you’d like incorporated into your therapy, ask the therapist about their experience with it ( and if they have no experience, know it is okay to ask for a referral to a provider that does).

  • Do you have a preference for in-person or virtual sessions and ask what the therapist offers.

  • You have the right to slowly share your story. While most therapists ask questions to assess at the time of first meeting, know that your story is yours alone. It can take time to build trust in sharing it with someone else.

  • If you are unsure of your mental health coverage, ask you therapist how best they can help you in finding out your coverage or if they offer a private-pay option.

Therapy can be vulnerable, challenging and rewarding. Your own individual work carries the potential to support future generations for success and relational wholeness.
